Laura: Through the Ages, pt. 1

After numerous distractions, we are ready to resume our retrospective of the Hector family. This time we are featuring Laura, our oldest daughter. We have seen tremendous growth in Laura since she first arrived, emotionally and mentally as well as physically. Let's take a look at this fascinating young lady!!

This photo was taken on the first visit that Laura made to her new home. If you look closely you will learn two things by studying this image. #1, she loves animals. #2, she was a scared little girl on that day. If you have ever met me, you can probably understand why she was so scared. Things are better now; she still loves animals but she isn't so afraid anymore.

This photo was taken on yet another pre-placement visit which happened to coincide with the County Fair being open. Laura enjoys many different activities, and riding roller coasters is near the top of her list.

Laura has a more common sense approach to water than Jonathan does. Staying dry has its advantages.

Yet another very early picture of Laura. The pierced earrings indicate that this photo was taken before the adoption was final.

Laura is a good student and is one of the family's best spellers.

Laura loves to sew. She is detail oriented and patient when she is doing something she loves.
Sadly, she does not find doing laundry to be as enjoyable. I believe that she could find her place in the world by being a home schooling Mom that designs disposable clothing!

Soccer is NOT something she loves. I think she got roped into this game by her siblings and friends. I am certain that she would have been just as content to remain on the side-lines.

Skipping rope is big fun. Not having a rope is no excuse!

Laura has the gift of music. It is not a strong passion of hers, and when Thomas became distracted by school and career, they both stopped playing. Perhaps they will both resume playing at a later date.

When all else fails, stand behind a waterfall.

Laura Hector: The Great Hunter

Sledding will put gladness on Laura's heart. She deserves to have a little fun from time to time.

Laura is quick to suggest a game of Nerts. She beats me every time.

Here's a gift giving tip when shopping for Laura. Choose a gift that is made in the USA.

Did I mention that Laura is an animal lover? She has difficulty catching the chickens or the sheep and she can't pick up the horse, so the cat receives most of her attention.

Laura will be getting braces very soon, and I bet that will bring out the best of her smile. She is growing gracefully from a young child into a lovely young lady. She has come to know and trust in the Lord. She has rediscovered the joy of having a loving family. We are blessed to have her.

March flowers bring April showers

Lunch was finished. Mrs. Hector and I decided to catch a little of the afternoon sun that was warming the back patio. The younger kids gathered 'round (Ben is in Illinois, Thomas is in the hospital) and it wasn't long before someone thought it would be a good idea to go for a stroll in the back pasture. Rain was in the forecast, so we knew the pleasant setting wouldn't last. Laura Becky and Sara did what all little girls do; they picked wildflowers. The boys jumped from rock to rock, examined ants and kicked at rotting logs, as boys will do. Without warning, the cold front blew in, clouds accumulated as the temperature dropped. We headed back to the house on what seemed like a different day from the one we started out on.

We stopped for this picture at the back gate before going in. Within an hour, the rain began to fall. It looks like conditions will be good for the lighting of the bonfire.

How to spend a Thursday

The day was warm and breezy, which can mean only one thing. Time to sail!! This was our first voyage of the year, assuming you don't count our little outing on the pond. Anthony, Jonathan, Thomas and I went to New Melones and had a very pleasant day.

Jonathan is measuring the wind while I hold the tiller. Anthony was in charge of the starboard genoa sheet. That is a fancy way of saying that he pulled on the rope.

Thomas also serves as the great helmsman.

We are on Port tack. Have you ever seen more beautiful clouds? Yes, the boat is leaning. That's what sailboats do.

The sails make for an interesting shot. You must take care to know what is in front of you when setting your course, as the genoa blocks a lot of the forward view.

Here we are on starboard tack. I am holding the camera level.

Jonathan isn't in the water, but he enjoys sailing just as much as swimming. We look forward to YOU coming along with us!
